In partnership with University of Arizona (UA), ‘micro-campus’ addresses global demand for higher education, opening doors for students to get international quality education without having to depart for the United States and providing academic destinations for Tel-U students
BANDUNG, Telkom University – Telkom University (Tel-U) is opening “micro-campus” in collaboration with University of Arizona (UA), which is a new education model giving access for Tel-U international class students to get UA degree, in addition to Tel-U degree. This program is a part of UA global network which consists of 13 micro-campuses in 10 countries. Tel-U is the first campus in Indonesia to involve in the network.
In the press release on May 23, 2017, UA has publicly launched Global Micro-Campus, which will be able to educate more than 25.000 international students abroad, and is projected to grow to more than 25 university partnerships within three years.
“Together, the University of Arizona and its international partners are answering the call for globally-accessible degree programs, creating one of the world’s most affordable, accessible and expansive networks for collaborative higher education,” said Brent White, the UA’s vice provost of International Education.
Unlike international branch campuses, micro-campuses are mutually beneficial partnerships with local universities. “The micro-campus model cracks the code. It infuses novel partnerships, cutting-edge content delivery and access on a grand scale by combining our highly regarded technology platform with location-based instruction,” said Melissa Vito, UA Senior VP for Student Affairs, Enrollment Management and Strategic Initiatives.
With joint micro-campus, Tel-U offers educational program, professors, and learning materials with international quality, whether it’s online materials or handout copies. Tel-U provides classrooms designated for the UA. It allows the UA to focus on delivering high-quality education in collaboration with the partner university.
Because micro-campuses are financially self-sustaining, they also promote long-term internationalization, providing a platform and physical location for faculty training, service-learning, internships, and other forms of engaged learning.
Micro-campus network opens the opportunity for domestic Tel-U students to travel and study in UA main campus in Tucson, Arizona, the United States, or in other micro-campuses – while remaining in their Tel-U and UA degree programs.
Short-term supporting non-degree programs are also developed, for example, one-semester long student exchange, credit transfer program, summer school, credit earning program, internship in multinational company, immersion program of language and culture.
Beyond fostering international education, micro-campuses can also act as hubs for joint faculty research, grant proposals, faculty exchange, doctoral and postdoctoral advanced learning, final project joint supervision, and other academic collaboration for lecturers.
In strengthening learning and research process, lecturers and students of Tel-U micro-campus will have the advantage of accessing UA electronic library that has million collections of books, journals, proceedings, and research technical reports.
The new micro-campuses in the following universities represent a prestigious group spanning the globe throughout Asia, the Middle East and North America. They are:
• Amman at Princess Sumaya University of Technology, Jordan
• Bandung at Telkom University, Indonesia
• Beirut at Lebanese International University, Lebanon
• Hanoi at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Vietnam
• Hualien City at Tzu Chi University of Science and Technology, Taiwan
• Manila at De La Salle University, Philippines
• Puebla at Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla, Mexico
• Shanghai at Shanghai University of Politics and Law, China
• Sharjah at the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
• Shenzhen at the Harbin Institute of Technology, China
• Taipei at Soochow University, Taiwan
These universities join the UA’s two existing micro-campuses: UA Qingdao at Ocean University of China, and UA Phnom Penh at the American University of Phnom Penh in Cambodia.
Tel-U is preparing several study programs that will be offered in the fields of engineering and business, in accordance with Tel-U specialty in information technology and telecommunication. These collaborative study programs must have the approvals from Kementerian Riset, Teknologi, dan Pendidikan Tinggi in Indonesia and Higher Learning Commission (HLC) in the United States. After the approvals are issued, Tel-U and UA will begin the program in 2018.
