Rector Invited Netizen to be More Productive Use Social Media

BANDUNG, TEL-U – Telkom University Rector Prof. Ir Mochamad Ashari, MEng, PhD said that 90 percent of Internet users in Indonesia currently use social media in digital communication. But with that amount, the majority use it for social interaction.

And with the big amount of this potential, said Rector, social media users should start shifting into economically valuable social function. “There are many communities or groups surround us and we just challenge them to change the form of communication,” said Rector to the participants of the international conference “2nd International Conference on Transformation in Communication (ICoTiC) 2016 was held in Bandung, Wednesday (23/11).

This event was part of the third anniversary of Telkom University. The event held from 23 to 24 November 2016 was attended by a number of speakers from among experts and practitioners of communication such as Terry Flew (Professor of Queensland University of Technology), Setiawan Sabana (Professor of Bandung Institute of Technology), and Loes Witteveen (Academician of Van Hall Larenstein University).

Also present Norsiah Abdul Hamid (Academician of North Malaysia University), Ade Irma Susanty (Academician of Telkom University), and Dorien Kartikawangi (Perhumas Indonesia), and the Director General for Communications and Public Information Ministry of Communications and Information Rosarita Niken Widiastuti.

According to Committee Chairman of 2nd ICOTIC 2016, Maulana Sharif, nowadays, the world is busy by appearing different types of communities and individuals who can speak on behalf of themselves. From all that, the Internet has a major role due to speak something to be heard by the whole world, it is not absolutely necessary to the conventional mass media channels but sufficient Internet network.

“For example, in Bandung, there are a number of communities of interest such as traditional toys, knitting, bicycle, creative writing, short films, storytelling, to philosophy. On that “noisy” things, there should be a bridge for the individual that can synergize with one another, so that the 2nd ICOTIC 2016 is for, “he said.

Another aim is to provide awareness of practitioners to synergize the creative individual or community as a way to advance its interests without losing the creativity of individuals / communities. And provide awareness for public officials to further facilitate the synergizing between people – the creative community, industry, and general public.

“Recently, through 2nd ICOTIC 2016, in IKOM Tel-U want to give the individual consciousness and the creative community to be active together with other parties as a way of developing creativity itself, as well as in the interest of a wider audience,” he said.

Education affiliation that also support these activities include the Association of Higher Education Communication Studies, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Binus University, and the University of Udayana, Bali.
