BANDUNG, TEL-U – Strengthening the global standard of skilled human resources can be done through education. But not all people in a country can easily access education. Residents in remote areas may be difficult to access a good quality education, while the excellent schools and colleges are located in larger cities.

In the forum of Global Executive Workshop for Higher Education – Issues & Challenges for the Region, Rector of Telkom University, Prof. Mochammad Ashari, M.Eng., Ph.D. mentions online education system may be one of appropriate solution, but must be supported by appropriate infrastructure to realize it.

Global Forum Executive Workshop for Higher Education – Issues & Challenges for the Region took place at North Malaysia University, Sintok, Kedah Malaysia, Thursday (11/6). Rector of Tel-U appeared as one of panelists at the forum organized by North Malaysia University and Michigan State University of United States.

“In remote areas, the distance and difficulty of transportation becomes a barrier to accessing education. Online education system could be one quick way to eliminate the barriers of distance and transportation difficulties. To make it happen, the online education system must be supported by the infrastructure supporting broadband and other facilities. Therefore, need the support of government regulation, “said Rector.

Of the 2.8 million number of high school graduates and vocational school in Indonesia, only 38 percent go on to university level. It is because the limited capacity of universities and geographic barriers. “While the national policy targets to increase the competence of human resources and internationalization,” he said.

Rector added that the challenges in the digital age is to increase the value by maximizing Internet-based system. Because of the online education system is possible. “The capacity of the university will not be a problem because it does not require the students present at the place. However, students can gain knowledge from a distance without the need to face geographic barriers. Thereby improving the quality of human resources can be evenly distributed, “he said.
