Learning Fun English Through Board Games

Community Service (ABDIMAS) is a routine event conducted by Telkom University lecturers. One of the lecturers of the Industrial Engineering Faculty chose the FUN WITH ENGLISH as the theme. This event was held in collaboration with the MGMP English Teacher Team of Bandung City and Industrial Engineering Faculty KK Engineering Management. The target community was junior high school teachers and students in Bandung.

The activity began with a workshop on introducing teaching methods for English teachers at the hall of SMPN 45 Bandung. It was attended by teachers from 16 SMP and MTS in the city of Bandung.

Chairman of the KK Engineering Management, Dr. Ir. Endang Chumaidiyah, M.T. gave an opening speech and support the sustainability of this activity. As a representative of Bandung City Teachers MGMP, Dra. Hj. Tini Hastini, M.M. appealed to Telkom University lecturers to share their experiences and knowledge regarding active, communicative and interactive English language teaching methods.

The workshop was taught how to develop teaching methods to practice new vocabulary and simple conversations using the Board Games. Introduction of the English Language Teaching Method delivered by Retno Hendryanti, Ph.D. and Ima Normalia Kusmayanti, M.Pd. grabbed high enthusiasm from participants. The design of the Board Games was tailored to the theme that will be taught in English language classes. The lecturer team also helped the teachers to design the cards in this Board Games game. Visualization of Board Games was also made as attractive as possible to encourage the millennials’ interest to learn English in an exciting and interesting atmosphere. The Board Games design was developed by Ima Normalia Kusmayanti, M.Pd., Devi Pratami, M.T., and Ika Arum Puspita, M.T.

As a follow-up to the ABDIMAS activities, the Board Games has been symbolically submitted to the Principal of 45 Bandung Middle School on March 15, 2019. To play with the Board Games, students will be divided into several groups, the game adopts a monopoly game which there are cards (red and blue ), dice, and pawn. Red and blue cards contain challenges that must be answered by members of the game. Each player must use English in communicating and answering every challenge. The challenges given are related to the material for discussion of English classes.
