JAKARTA, Telkom University โ Digital technology plays a vital role as a catalyst for accelerating post-pandemic economic recovery and digital transformation into the future. Collaboration between key stakeholders in various fields, especially innovation and research, is necessary to ensure continuous progress so that the digital ecosystem becomes stronger.
It is this belief that underlies Huawei as the world’s leading provider of information and communication technology (ICT) to strengthen collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) through the signing of an extension of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). At the same time, Huawei has set a new milestone in research collaboration by signing MoUs with two leading higher education institutions in Indonesia, the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Telkom University, through joint labs.
The MoU was signed by the Rector of Telkom University, Prof. Dr. Adiwijaya, and Yenty Joman, Director of Government Affairs, Huawei Indonesia, at Park Hyatt Hotel Jakarta (8/11). Huawei established the Beyond 5.5G Lab for research and development that can facilitate researchers to produce innovations in world-quality technology at Telkom University.
Tel-U HUAWEI Beyond 5.5 Generation (B5.5G) Lab is a Beyond 5.5G network security development laboratory initiated by PUI-PT AICOMS, Telkom University, and funded by HUAWEI Indonesia.
Lab B5.5G has an “Out-in” scheme that brings technology from AICOMS to HUAWEI. The B5.5G Lab produces 5G-Advanced and 6G technologies for national and international standards. In addition, the B5.5G Lab also conducts studies for recommendations and policies for the government and industry.
The B5.5G Lab also supports technology production by local industry. B5.5GLab provides 6 (six) outcomes, namely KOL (Key Opinion Leader), Trend, 5G-Advanced Report, 6G Report, 5G-Advanced Patent, and 6G Patent.
The Rector of Telkom University, Prof. Dr. Adiwijaya, welcomes this collaboration. The results of this collaboration show a positive partnership to prepare for the Beyond 5.5 Generation wireless communication era, with essential characteristics being artificial intelligence/machine learning for signal processing, massive connectivity, low latency, and high spectral efficiency.
“The demands of these four aspects continue to grow, along with market demands for increasing service quality, and the impact of the pandemic that we experienced in the past two years changing human activities, with the need for the internet being one of the basic needs,” he said.
Prof. Adiwijaya said that Telkom University responds to the needs of future professionals in the telecommunications sector, which is expected to make a real contribution in determining the direction of telecommunications technology with one of its implementations in the form of research and scientific development activities on an ongoing basis.
“It is an honor for us (Tel-U) to collaborate strategically with Huawei through this Beyond 5.5G Laboratory. This joint lab aims to improve local capabilities and develop capacity in producing patents to contribute to national and global standards. We hope that the results of this joint laboratory will become a local content initiative and improve the ability of our researchers for global competence,” he said.
The Rector added, hopefully, this collaboration can produce tangible works that will color the B5.5 generation of telecommunications technology in various forms, including Key Opinion Leader (KOL), future technological development directions, publication of research results, and commercial national and international patents to increase the competitiveness of the nation.
“We hope that the main outcome of the development of this technology can spur creativity and productivity in the community, which impacts the growth of the nation’s economy. I hope that all parts of the academic community, including lecturers, researchers, students, and staff, can maximize this collaboration and bring great benefits to Telkom University’s real contribution to Indonesia and the world,” he said.
VP, Director of the Board, Huawei Indonesia, James Sun, said that collaboration enhances national competitiveness and increases capacity to take on a more significant role in the global market.
“Guided by Huawei’s I Do Collaborate commitment, Huawei reiterates its real contribution to strengthening Indonesia’s ICT ecosystem and has an impact on benefits for the digital society and economic growth. We believe the stronger the pillars we build, the stronger the digital ecosystem will survive to sustain the digital transformation,” said James Sun.
Secretary General of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Sekjen Kemkominfo) Mira Tayyiba expressed his appreciation to Huawei for the initiative to gather strength together to strengthen Indonesia’s digital ecosystem.
“With the presence of the digital transformation that we are working on and the collaboration that we are building between the government, industry, and academia, I believe that our efforts to encourage inclusive digital transformation can be accelerated. The signing of the MoU of cooperation between the Ministry of Communication and Information and Huawei today will signify a major initiative that can benefit Huawei and Indonesia. This collaboration will also help all of us in our efforts to realize an inclusive digital transformation through expanding connectivity and developing the digital sector. In the future, I am sure our initiative will bring great and tangible benefits to the Indonesian people in general,” said Mira Tayyiba.
