Telkom University Establishes a Center for Excellence in Science and Technology

BANDUNG, Telkom University โ€“ As a university with the best innovation at the 2018 – 2020 Widyaphadi Science and Technology (IPTEK) award, Telkom University presents a Smart Telecommunication research center which later became the Center for Excellence in Science and Technology for Higher Education (PUI-PT) under the official name of The University Center of Excellence for Advanced Intelligent Communications (AICOMS). The center is recognized not only at Telkom University, but also nationally based on assessments from the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research and Technology. AICOMS is the first PUI-PT at Telkom University since 2020.

PUI-PT AICOMS focuses on the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for telecommunication, specifically for 5G-Advanced (2025) and 6G (2030). PU-PT AICOMS Telkom University is chaired by Dr. Eng Khoirul Anwar, a Telkom University scientist who has successfully entered the list of world-renowned scientists, according to inews.id (2023).

Khairul Anwar succeeded in finding and developing the concept of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). This concept has become a standard for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the working basis for 4G and 5G technology in such a way that is efficient in transmitting broadband communication.

PUI Telkom University has expertise and experience in developing 4G, 5G, 5G-Advanced, and 6G networks. With this expertise, AICOMS has a vision to become the worldโ€™s leading research center in the fields of Information Theory, Coding Theory, AI for telecommunications, and quantum communications through developing ideal collaborative research models, improving research quality, and strengthening collaboration.

At present, AICOMS is researching 5G-Advanced (2025), and 6G (2030) with quantum and machine learning. AICOMS actively collaborates with government, industry sector, and academia for future technologies. Aside from actively participating in various national projects, one of which is 10 main technologies that Indonesia has to master towards Advanced Indonesia 2045, AICOMS is also actively contributing to international projects on AI and quantum innovation for 6G to support Golden Indonesia 2045. The projects involve the contribution of 50 members of AICOMS, consisting of undergraduate, graduate, doctoral students, and lecturers. The AICOMS International Research Project also became the project with the highest score in ASEAN in the November 2022 Evaluation.

The current AICOMSโ€™ top featured products include:

  • PATRIOT-Net with Mobile Cognitive Radio Base Station (MCRBS): The tool is able to provide communication access for victims of natural disasters and โ€œconnectโ€ the disaster-stricken areas with safe areas and can be used to find victims (with additional specific antenna).
  • MIMO-DSC for 5G High-speed Train: AICOMS develops MIMO-DSC technology for the future railway mobile communication system (FRMCS) which is a 5G-based high-speed train signaling system. With the MIMO-DSC, the Doppler effect can be overcome up to a maximum speed of 1200 km/h.
  • 5G-MERDEKA: The 5G base station technology based on RAN-MERDEKA and Open Interface, together with the industrial sector implement 5G in Indonesia for the extended C-band.
  • Quantum-MMU: International research collaboration between Tel-U and Multimedia University (MMU) Malaysia to produce quantum research on 6G and provide inspiration through a textbook on Quantum Information Theory and Beyond 5G.
  • OTH-Roket: Rocket research developed by Indonesian using Over The Horizon (OTH) Communications technology, Kalman Filter, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Future Channel Coding to support rocket communication up to 4900 km/h.
