Telkomsel Launches The 5G Service at Telkom University

  • Telkomsel is continuing to develop the 5G ecosystem by launching Telkomsel 5G services simultaneously in five cities include Surabaya, Makassar, Bandung, Batam, and Denpasar. Those 5 cities complete a total of nine cities in Indonesia since it was inaugurated on May 27. 2021.
  • The presence of Telkomsel 5G in the Bandung area is carried out at Telkom University in the hope of opening more research opportunities for the development of innovations. It aims to generate smart digital entrepreneurs who can encourage Indonesia’s transformation towards complete digital sovereignty and independence.
  • Telkomsel also signed a memorandum of understanding with Telkom University to conduct research on 5G technology, accelerate efforts to utilize and develop 5G and its ecosystem, as well as encourage the birth of future digital talents capable of realizing the nation’s digital independence.

BANDUNG, Telkom University – Continuing its presence in the cities of Jakarta, Medan, Surakarta, and Balikpapan, Telkomsel continues to accelerate the development of the 5G ecosystem by launching Telkomsel 5G services in Bandung (7/6). The continued gradual and measurable expansion of Telkomsel’s 5G services also encourages the strengthening of the cross-sector digital ecosystem by presenting digital lifestyle solutions with a commitment to presenting the best 5G experience that will support the progress of society.

According to Telkomsel’s Director of Human Capital Management (HCM), R. Muharam Perbawamukti, “The presence of Telkomsel 5G services in these five cities is a manifestation of Telkomsel’s commitment as the first 5G operator in Indonesia in providing access to leading digital connectivity which will further encourage the opening of more opportunities. The wider scope for all possibilities, including in terms of community empowerment and industrial sector transformation. Our next commitment is to make sure 5G is available to everyone in Indonesia, whether for the consumer segment, government, academia, or industry. To that end, we will gradually expand 5G coverage and develop digital solutions through the highest quality 5G services, high-speed and low-latency networks, and encourage stronger collaboration between stakeholders who share the same strong goal of digital transformation to support daily activities.”

Muharam added that the presence of the Telkomsel 5G network was able to increase national digital capabilities by advancing leading sectors in these cities. One of them is the tourism sector by diversifying services and services through the optimization of leading digital technology. Or the education sector that can support scalable and appropriate research development efforts to ensure the empowerment of appropriate 5G technology into the future. In addition, 5G can also encourage the implementation of Industry 4.0 by increasing productivity and operational efficiency for various industrial sectors.

In the initial phase of the launch in these five additional cities, Telkomsel 5G services are available in several areas whose coverage will continue to be gradually expanded to the city of Bandung, the Telkomsel 5G network is present at Telkom University and the Bandung Institute of Technology. The presence of 5G technology from Telkomsel at these two well-known campuses is intended to support research carried out by students in developing the use of appropriate 5G technology for people’s lives. This is in line with Telkomsel’s commitment to presenting 5G technology not only to accelerate the adoption of a more productive and innovative digital lifestyle by the community but also to encourage Indonesia’s transformation towards complete digital sovereignty and independence.

At Telkom University, several applications and innovations have been developed from research on the use of 5G technology and its ecosystem. Examples include the Telesthethoscope, internet of things (IoT) based stethoscope that allows data storage of lung and heart sound recordings as well as remote users so that their use is safer during a pandemic; PATRIOT-NET, which is an integrated system in disaster prevention efforts in the form of an early warning system by utilizing IoT technology and integrated with telecommunications network recovery innovations using Mobile Cognitive Radio Base Station (MCRBS); Autonomous UVC Mobile Robot, an autonomous robot that can sterilize medical isolation rooms with UVC light; Doctor Representative Robot (Doper), a communication tool between doctors and Covid-19 patients remotely that enables infrared temperature monitoring; and the Arrhythmias Monitoring System (Amons), which is an electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring tool with a higher level of accuracy and sensitivity, and others.

At this 5G launch event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between Telkom University and Telkomsel which was signed directly by the Chancellor of Telkom University Prof. Adiwijaya and Director of HCM Telkomsel R. Muharam Perbawamukti.

Muharam explained, “The signing of the MoU with Telkom University is also a clear proof of our commitment in presenting an appropriate 5G service ecosystem through collaborative efforts with stakeholders, especially with the academic community and the education sector. We are very enthusiastic to push together with campuses to strengthen the ecosystem in producing digital talent in the future. Telkomsel will also continue to strengthen our collaboration with other stakeholders in the 5G ecosystem to provide the right Telkomsel 5G services to realize Indonesia’s digital independence.”

The signing of the MoU was witnessed directly by the Regent of Bandung Regency H. Dadang Supriatna, and Deputy Mayor of Bandung H. Yana Mulyana.

Dadang Supriatna appreciates Telkomsel’s commitment and efforts to continue to provide the latest broadband communication services in the Bandung Regency area. “Bandung Regency is committed to being able to provide digitalization and public services that can provide experience and convenience for its citizens, therefore we hope that collaboration with Telkomsel in the future will be able to open new opportunities that can advance the Bandung Regency area”.

According to Yana Mulyana, the Bandung Government has been ranked 28th in the implementation of smart cities from the Eden Strategy Institute. This means that the digitalization carried out by the city government has been recognized by the world.

“And we hope that with the presence of Telkomsel’s 5G technology, we hope that there will be good synergy and collaboration to provide the best service for the people of the city of Bandung,” he said.

About Telkomsel 5G Service

Meanwhile, regarding the readiness of 5G devices on the market, there are now a series of compatible devices to support Telkomsel 5G services with 5G NSA (non-standalone) technology capabilities at a frequency of 2300 MHz, including Oppo Reno5 5G, Huawei Mate 40, Vivo X60, and Vivo X60 Pro. In the future, Telkomsel will continue to expand cooperation with various device partners to provide varied choices for all Telkomsel customers, including Apple and Samsung. At this initial stage, customers need to make adjustments to the smartphone software to be able to connect to the Telkomsel 5G service, the procedure for which will be provided by each smartphone manufacturer.

For customers who want to enjoy Telkomsel 5G services, they must first ensure the following:

  • Using a uSIM type card (4G SIM card)
  • Being in a location that has been served by the Telkomsel 5G network
  • Using a smartphone device that supports Telkomsel 5G network and services, and ensures that the 5G feature is active on the device
  • Make sure the phone number is activated with the 5G feature

For now, the mobile numbers of some customers have been activated by the 5G feature directly (increasing gradually). Customers can also visit telkomsel.com/5G to fill out the 5G feature activation registration form for their cell phone number and give their aspirations as consideration for the development of the Telkomsel 5G network.
