The “Multi Talented” ChatGPT, a Solution or a Problem?

The development of technology has progressed from year to year. In the past, we had to look for references from books, but now we can utilize digital media. However, while the advancement of technological development can provide solutions to problems, it can also be a problem itself. The users, who are an important factor in the use of technology, can decide whether to use it for positive or negative purposes. Just like the emergence of artificial intelligence technology, ChatGPT can create a new culture among the public, including school and college students.

GPT stands for Generative Pre-Trained Transformer. It is a chatbot that can answer users’ questions like a human, but in the automatic text format. The ChatGPT systems use algorithms and machine learning that enable the users to interact through sending messages as if they are sending it to real people. Lecturer at the School of Applied Sciences (FIT), Prof. Suyanto said that ChatGPT technology is highly anticipated, as ChatGPT can create a quick breakthrough to speed up the birth of new knowledge or technological science.

“ChatGPT is a highly anticipated technology by scientists in computing science because ChatGPT is a breakthrough which can speed up the birth of new technological science,” said Suyanto.

ChatBOT is created by Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, and Waren O’Hara. Quoted from Pikiran Rakyat Newspaper, around 13 million visitors have used ChatGPT every day. On the other hand, the emergence of ChatGPT has caused anxiety in the educational sector. ChatGPT is considered to have a negative impact on students as it can make them lazy in thinking to complete their assignments. It is easy to locate the answers through ChatGPT. Prof. Suyanto stated that some people considered ChatGPT as an opportunity, depending on the regulation during the use of ChatGPT itself.

“In the past, it was concerned that calculators would make people lazy to count. However, it did not last forever. In the meantime, we made rules and regulations during examinations that students are not allowed to bring calculators during the exams. Same as today, ChatGPT is considered to be either a threat or opportunity. All those things depend on the regulation of technological use,” said Suryanto.
