Workshop Discourse Network Analysis in Collaboration with BRIN Practitioners

The School of Communication and Business (FKB) Tel-U held a Discourse Network Analysis (DNA) Training on Thursday (9/2) in Manterawu Building at Telkom University. DNA is a tool to systematically identify a discourse structure in various textual documents such as newspaper/printed media articles, transcripts of parliamentary debates, etc.

In this training, participants were trained by Purnama Alamsyah. He has worked in the Research Center for Social Welfare, Villages, and Connectivity in National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

“DNA tools enables to be used in many research areas because it is designed to map the issues and policies. In several papers, it is said that DNA can map regulations and some communication strategies in the government campaign in some countries,” said Purnama.

The Head of Humanities & Media Studies Expertise Group, Alila Pramiyanti, Ph.D., hoped that the presentation addressed by the speaker would be well received by the participants.

“The training is dedicated to some lecturers joined in Humanities & Media Studies Expertise Group and Public Relations & Communications in Tel-U. There are approximately 50 lecturers participating in this training who are ready to implement the workshop outcomes on their future research program,” said Alila.

DNA is a JAVA-based software device developed by Philip Leifeld of Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) and Institute of Political Science, University of Bern. The results of Discourse Network Analysis (DNA) would be visualized by using Visone software device, UCINET, etc.
