Cooperation between Bank Indonesia and Telkom University in Increasing Business Capacity in Three Islamic Boarding Schools

Tel-U dan BI Kerjasama dalam Peningkatan Kapasitas Usaha di Tiga PesantrenBANDUNG, Telkom University – Empowerment of sharia business units in Islamic boarding schools in developing the economic independence of Islamic boarding schools. It is an activity carried out by Bank Indonesia to carry out one of its missions, which is to develop the sharia economy and finance at the national level to the regional level. 

In carrying out these activities, the Industrial Engineering School of Telkom University received the honor from the Department of Economics and Sharia Finance of Bank Indonesia (DEKS BI) to be trusted as one of its partners since 2020. 

In 2021, this collaboration will continue and will be held again in three Islamic boarding schools, namely Arafah Islamic Boarding School in Cililin, West Bandung Regency, with tempe chips business, Madaarikul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Selaawi, Garut Regency, with turmeric processing business and At-Taqwa Islamic Boarding School in Salawu, Tasikmalaya Regency, with ant sugar manufacturing business. 

After the production machine grant program and its training were carried out in 2020/2021, in 2021/2022, a program to improve product quality, marketing, and financial administration was carried out for the three pesantren business units. The launch of this mentoring activity has been carried out in a hybrid manner, and the mentoring activity will take place from November 2021 to September 2022.

In her speech, the Deputy Director of DEKS BI, Ms. Anna Setyawati, expressed her hope that with the program that will be implemented, the pesantren business unit can produce products that are more acceptable to the general public and industry. In addition, with this business unit, it is hoped that the pesantren can produce students who, apart from understanding religious knowledge, also can carry out productive economic activities. Meanwhile, the Director of PPM Telkom University, Dr. Kemas Muslim, ST. M.ISD, expressed his joy and support for community service activities that involve collaboration from many parties, such as those carried out in these three Islamic boarding schools. It is hoped that this collaboration will be more beneficial in solving problems the community faces. On the other hand, the pesantren expressed their appreciation to Bank Indonesia and Telkom University for all the assistance and support. The Madaarikul Ulum Islamic Boarding School specifically conveyed that the activities were carried out in addition to the benefits related to the pesantren business unit. Their publications through several local and social media have made the pesantren better known to the public and increased public trust, as evidenced by the number of students studying at the pesantren.

Many outcomes have been produced from the community service program from this partnership with Bank Indonesia. The outputs of the first-year program, 2020/2021, include a mini design of a tempe chips factory at the Arafah Islamic Boarding School, a mini design of a turmeric powder factory at the Madaarikul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, and a mini design of an ant sugar factory at the At-Taqwa Islamic Boarding School. In addition to the design and installation of mini-factory machines at the 3 Islamic boarding schools, intellectual property rights were also produced, practical work and final student assignments, and several publications. It is hoped that in 2021/2022, the assistance carried out will improve product quality, improve product packaging, strengthen marketing channels, initiate B2B sales channels and improve financial administration skills.

Regarding the work team, the current number of personnel involved is 24 people and is chaired by Dr. Endang Chumaidiyah. The personnel comprises three teams with expertise covering engineering and production management, food technology, marketing, finance and cost accounting, information systems, and packaging design. The majority of the team came from the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, except for packaging design from the Faculty of Creative Industries and food technology from Pasundan University, Bandung.
